Lopster 1.2.1 for Mac OS X 10.3 Panther
Here’s an easy to install Mac OS X Package of the open source software Lopster 1.2.1 I found on the Web. It was compiled and packed by some italian guy who calls himself “eqp”. So all credit goes to him (and of course to all the developers that made Lopster possible). I think such a great open source Program should be made available to everyone. That’s why I set up this little website.
About Lopster:
Lopster is a Napster Client developed in C using the GTK user interface. Napster is a protocol for sharing MP3 files between users. With Napster, the files stay on the client machine, never passing through the server. The server provides the ability to search for particular files and initiate a direct transfer between the clients. In addition, chat forums similar to IRC are available.
Lopster is developed on Linux and is mainly tested on a i586/Linux machine with kernel 2.4.2 and GTK 1.2.10
For more information point your browser to the developer site: http://lopster.sf.net
They have detailed manpages on how to use the program and even a Mac OS X Forum. Your comments should be posted there. (Now you can post here, too)
Some guy compiled lopster in Mac OS X 10.3 and made a .pkg install file with Lopster and all the dependencies.
It was tested on a new Panther installation with X11 and BSD Subsystem, and it works great!

Installation instructions:
Mount the disk image to your desktop and double-click installation package. You’ll be guided through the installation process. The .pkg installs a lopster alias in /Applications/Lopster. To start lopster all you need is a double click on the alias and X11 starts automaticly (10.3 only). No need of XCode or fink.
Q: Will lopster run under Mac OS X 10.0 – 10.2?
A: It was only tested on Mac OS X v10.3 Panther but it should work at least under Mac OS X 10.2. I have no information regarding 10.0 and 10.1. But who is using these versions anymore…?
Q: Will Lopster run under Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger?
A: Most likely but I haven’t tested it since I don’t use it any more.
A: Most likely (thanks to rosetta) but I haven’t tested it since I don’t use it any more. You guys should go with the original builds. You can find them @ http://lopster.sf.net
A: Lopster works on any Mac that is able to run Mac OS X 10.3. It requires an installed BSD subsystem and X11 which you can get here if you don’t have your Panther CD 3 handy…
Q: How do I get a server list and connect to Servers?
A: Hit the “Server” button, click with your right mouse button in the blank field and chose “refresh server list”. There you go.
If you have further questions regarding the use of the Program they’ll be most likely answered in the official Lopster FAQ which can be found here.
